AUSTIN - The Houston Dynamo earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the first time since 2006 with their 2-0 shutout win over the Austin Aztex in Austin.
The Dynamo weren’t able to create many scoring chances in the first half as the teams battled to a 0-0 tie after the first half of play.
Austin continued to find limited success in creating opportunities in the second half but the Dynamo got things rolling as they picked up two second half goals. Dominic Oduro and Corey Ashe scored for the Dynamo in the second half. Ashe scored at the 70th minute to put the Aztex in a 1-0 hole, and later during stoppage time, Oduro picked up the Dynamo’s second and last goal of the night.
The Aztex are in their first season as a USL first division team and in the preseason were able to play to a 2-2 tie with the Dynamo. The USL is a level below the MLS.
The U.S. Open Cup dates back to 1914 and is open to all of the teams affiliated with the U.S. Soccer Federation.
