St. Edwards University rides pitching and a couple of long balls to series win over Newman
After splitting their first two games on Saturday, St. Edwards University (21-12, 16-7) claimed a 5-2 victory Sunday over Newman (17-14, 15-13) in the third and final game of a three game set.
St. Edward’s starting pitcher Jeff Rohr (1-1) was outstanding giving up just two runs over seven innings, both runs were unearned. He allowed just four hits on the day while striking out four.
With Rohr doing his part on the mound, and after picking up a run in the first inning, the Hilltopper bats got busy and put up three runs in the fourth inning. Justin Schufelt led off the inning with a home run and then later in the inning Robert Hays connected for a two-run shot to give St. Edwards a 4-0 lead.
Newman answered back in the same inning as they picked up two runs to cut the lead to 4-2 before Hilltopper pitching silenced their bats the rest of the way.
St. Edwards pushed another run across in the seventh inning when Drew Cross drove in Dylan Schuch with a double. The RBI double extended the Hilltopper lead to 5-2 and that was the final score as Dustin Johnson came on in relief to hold Newman scoreless over the last two innings.
Schuch went 2-for-4 for St. Edwards in the game with two runs scored. Hays had two RBI’s and a home run with his 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
