East's Fourth Quarter Surge Sends Them Past The West in 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl
SAN ANTONIO - James Wilder Jr. helped lead the way as the East overcame a 10-0 second half deficit to come away with a 13-10 victory over the East in the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Wilder, the son of former Tampa Bay Bucs running back James Wilder, scored on a 3-yard run with just over four minutes to go in the game to give the East a 13-10 lead. He finished the game with 39 yards, most of those yards came during the winning drive when he carried the ball four times for 26 yards. He also hauled in a 17 yard pass on the final drive.
The East challenged the West with a steady rushing attack as running back Demetrius Hart earned most valuable player honors with his 100 yards on eight carries. Hart, from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, announced he will play college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The West went up 10-0 in the third quarter when Cody Kessler of Centennial High School in Bakersfield, California, tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Shipley. Shipley, from Brownwood, Texas, is the younger brother of former Texas Longhorn Jordan Shipley and will join the Longhorns next season.
The East managed to get their first points when Miles Shuler's 22-yard reception from Teddy Bridgewater resulted in an East touchdown.
The East defense answered the challenge in the fourth quarter as they kept the West in check while their offense solved the West defense, mainly behind the effort of James Wilder, allowing them to claim the 13-10 win before 37,893 fans.
