UH Coogs Dominate East Carolina Pirates to Stay Undefeated

HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars (6-0, 2-0 C-USA) used their ever so common method of success Saturday to defeat the East Carolina Pirates (1-4, 1-1 C-USA) 56-3. Their method of success consisted of Case Keenum's outstanding quarterbacking which helped spark the high powered Cougar offense as they rolled down field time and time again, and a tenacious defensive effort.



















The Coogs defense kept the pressure on the Pirates and came away with a pair of second quarter interceptions, the first by Phillip Steward and the second by Derrick Matthews. Keenum then responded by guiding the UH offense on scoring drives after each interception as the Coogs lead bulged to 35-3 by halftime.


Thomas Bates came away with the Coogs third interception of the day when he picked of a Dominique Davis pass minutes into the third quarter as they looked to give their offense another chance to find their way into the end zone again. Michael Hayes made that happen moments later when he raced past the ECU defense on a 19-yard touchdown run to continue to bury the Pirates. Keenum would later hit Tyron Carrier on a 27-yard touchdown pass to begin the fourth quarter and when it was all said and done the Coogs were still undefeated after a dominating performance.

The Pirates were unable to do anything against the Coogs defense on their first possession as they went three-and-out. Patrick Edwards helped the Coogs build on their momentum when he took the punt back 54 yards down the the ECU 18 yard line. It took all of two plays for UH to score again and this time Keenum rewarded Edwards when he tossed a 3-yard touchdown to him to push the lead to 14-0 with 7:22 to go in the first quarter.

ECU got on the board a couple of minutes later when Micheal Barbour booted a 54-yard field goal leaving the Coogs lead at 14-3. The Coogs answered with yet another scoring drive that Charles Sims put the finishing touches on with his 5-yard run seconds into the second quarter. The touchdown left the score at 21-3 and it was all Coogs from that point on.


Case Keenum finished with 304 yards on 30-of-37 passing with three touchdowns. Patrick Edwards caught 12 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Charles Sims totaled 84 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns.

ECU starting quarterback Dominique Davis was 13-of-23 passing for 169 yards and was intercepted three times. Lance Lewis had five catches for 73 yards while teammate Torrance Hunt rushed 11 times for 64 yards.
