Stellar Defensive Effort and Balanced Offense Powers Stony Point to 56-14 Win Over San Antonio Wagner
With a 28 point first quarter, and 465 yards of total offense, Stony Point came away with their second win of the season Friday night at RRISD Sports Complex. The Tiger win came against a San Antonio Wagner team that was playing their opening game of the season.
Stony Point got on the board first with a Sam Kelly five yard touchdown run and Kory Leis extra point. The Tigers followed with an Aaryn Sharp touchdown pass to Cody Jones to build an early 14-0 lead. The Tigers defense was also off to a quick start as they held SA Wagner in check in the early going.
Stony Point kept rolling offensively tacking on two additional scores in the first quarter. Kelley picked up his second touchdown of the game on a 20-yard run, and teammate Stephan Williams followed with a nine yard touchdown run, to close out the first quarter scoring with the Tigers lead at 28-0.
Sharp scored on a 13-yard run to push the Stony Point lead out to 28-0. San Antonio Wagner got their offense moving as they responded with their first score of the game on a Sam Toney 29-yard touchdown pass to Seth Pierce that was followed by a Jamie Hernandez extra point cutting the lead to 35-7 midway through the second quarter.
The Tigers bounced right back to build their lead once again when Kelley picked up his third touchdown of the day on a 2-yard run pushing the Stony Point lead to 42-7 late in the second quarter. San Antonio Wagner was unable to reach the end zone again before the half ended leaving Stony Point with a commanding lead heading into the locker room at the half.
Still unable to come up with an answer for the powerful running game of the Tigers, San Antonio Wagner gave up an early third quarter touchdown to Kelley, who outran the Wagner defense on a 52-yard touchdown run, to put seven more points on the board.
San Antonio Wagner used a Branton Houston 5-yard pass to Jacoby Clay to reduce the Tigers lead to 56-14 against a Stony Point team that turned in an effort worthy of their top state ranking.
Stony Point totaled 247 yards of offense with three Tigers rushing for over 50 yards. Branton Houston turned in an outstanding night leading San Antonio Wagner in rushing with 105 yards.
