Stony Point Dominates in Win Over Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon
ROUND ROCK — Fifth-ranked Stony Point (1-0) hosted Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon (0-1), a select team from high schools in Monterrey, Thursday night in Round Rock and used their speed to their advantage as they rolled to an impressive 48-7 win in their season opener.
Nevi Leon took the opening kick off and found the early going tough against the Stony Point defense and was forced to punt after having no success on their opening possession. Moments later the Tigers struck for their first points of the game when Stephen Williams capped off the scoring drive by hauling in a 1-yard pass from teammate Gus Barrera.
The Tigers tacked on another touchdown later in the first quarter when Aaryn Sharp ran it in from 24 yards and after the extra point kick Stony Point held a 14-0 lead.
Nevi Leon managed to cut the lead to 14-7 at the 11:54 mark of the second quarter when their offense connected for a 12 yard pass and Mendoza tacked on the extra point. Stony Point answered back and flexed their offensive muscle to the tune of 21 points in the quarter to build a 35-7 lead by halftime.
The Tiger defense managed to shut out Nuevo Leon in the second half. Their offense stuck with running the ball as they eat up the clock and scored seven points in the third quarter and six in the fourth to stake claim to a 48-7 win.
Stony Point totaled and impressive 471 yard rushing to go along with 25 first downs. They held Neuvo Leon to just six yards rushing and 95 yards passing.
Stony Point will be back in action next Friday night at Dragon Stadium when they take on San Antonio Wagner at 7:30 p.m.
