Stony Point Powers Past McNeil as Sam Kelley Rushes for 133 yards and Three Touchdowns
Fresh off a four overtime win over Round Rock, The McNeil Mavericks (1-5) looked to pull of the upset Friday against The Stony Point Tigers(6-0). The only problem with that was they would be faced with the challenge of stopping a powerful Tigers offense and running back Sam Kelley. That proved to be a tough task as Stony Point Rolled to a 37-8 win with Sam Kelley scored three rushing touchdowns on the night.
Stony Point opened the game with a Stephen Williams nine yard touchdown run for a quick 7-0 lead. They extended the lead to 13-0 later in the first quarter when Aaryn Sharp hit Williams for a 17-yard touchdown pass to help the Tigers get off to a fast start.
McNeil picked up a touchdown later in the first quarter when Cooper Lewis powered his way into the end zone on a one yard touchdown plunge that was followed by a Daniel Williams two point conversion run. That left the score at 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Kelley then got rolling as he gave the Maverick’s defense fits in the second quarter. He picked up his first rushing touchdown when he raced past the McNeil defense on a 48-yard run. His second touchdown of the quarter came on a five yard run minutes later the put the Tigers up 27-8. Kory Leis added a 35-yard field goal later in the quarter to push the Stony Point lead out to 30-8.
The Tiger defense gave up the early touchdown but the Mavericks offense found the going tough after that as the Stony Point defense kept them in check the rest of the way.
Kelley finished off the scoring for the Tigers when he took the handoff and made his way to the end zone on a 29-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. His third touchdown of the game put the score at 37-8 which would eventually be the final score.
Stony Point rolled up 498 yards of total offense to McNeil’s 263. The Tiger’s Gus Barrera and Aaryn Sharp combined for 206 yards passing. McNeil quarterback Mack Starnes was 5-of-10 for 142 yards passing.
