St. Edwards Unable to Overcome UT - Permian Basin as They Fall in Extra Innings
AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edwards (19-18, 13-8 HC) hung tough with UT - Permian Basin (16-22, 11-13 HC) Saturday but eventually fell to the Falcons by a score of 4-2 in 13 innings.
Dylan Schuch helped St. Eds get out to an early lead when he drew a walk and stole second base. Adam Shank then stepped to the plate and scorched a single to right field that allowed Schuch to race all the way home for a 1-0 Hilltoppers lead.
UT Permian Basin moved out in front 2-1 in the second inning when they scored a pair of runs on a two RBI two-run double. The Falcons mounted another threat in the third inning resulting in starting pitcher Tyler Harris yielding way to Jeff Rohrback who came on in relief. Rohrbach did a nice job in relief as he allowed just six hits over 7.2 innings of work.
Shank helped the Hilltoppers tie the game up in the ninth inning when he came up with a key hit with two runners on base and two outs. Shank's hit allowed Paul McCoy to score from second base but was thrown out at second base allowing the Falcons to avoid any further damage in the inning as they moved into extra innings tied at 2-2.
Both teams hung tough in extra innings before the Falcons worked Hilltopper reliever Patrick Scholl for a couple of walks to get some traffic going on the base paths. Matt Anderson came on in relief and allowed another base runner to load the bases. UT Permian Basin then got an RBI single to plate two runs and take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 13th inning. St. Eds failed to score in the bottom half of the frame allowing the Falcons to come away with the win.
