Southwestern uses a total team effort to come away with a 96-87 win over Concordia University
GEORGETOWN – Southwestern’s Anthony Cox went 12-of-16 from the free throw line and finished with 22 points to help lead the Pirates past a hustling Concordia University team Saturday by a score of 96-87.
Both teams fought hard in the early going with the hopes of seizing the momentum. Neither team was able to do so resulting in a 27-27 tie at the 6:27 mark of the first half. Brad Walker had six points up until that point to help Concordia keep the game tied up as they looked to make a run.
But it was Southwestern who was able to put together a 14-8 run over the next four minutes to move out to a 41-35 lead. Logan Hurley hit a 3-pointer, and Anthony Cox hit a couple of free throws and a 3-pointer, to help the Pirates build their lead. Southwestern ended up taking a 45-39 lead into the half.
The Pirates came out of the break and held the Concordia offense in check for the first several minutes of the second half as they began to build on their lead that bulged to 64-45 behind eights quick points from Jonathan Brown and four points from Anthony Cox.
Southwestern was able to hold a double digit lead until the final few seconds of the game when Concordia cut their lead down to 96-87 with six seconds to go in the game.
