Southlake Carroll Outlasts Fort Bend Hightower to Claim State Title
ARLINGTON — It was just one of several championship games this weekend at Cowboys Stadium but to Southlake Carroll (16-0) and Fort Bend Hightower (13-3) it was their chance to step on the big stage and claim a state championship in front of 42,896 fans. In the end it was Southlake Carroll claiming yet another state title and Hightower seeing one slip away as they came up just short in the 36-29 Southlake Carroll win.
jarring the ball loose from Hightower receiver Donald Weathersby. Davis followed through on the play and helped shift the momentum when he recovered the fumble to set the Dragons up to mount a drive that would give them the lead.
Southlake Carroll took full advantage a short time later when Hill found the end zone on a six yard touchdown run to take a 36-29 lead.
Early on Hightower used a Drew Brown field goal to take an early lead. Hightower responded with a touchdown drive that ended with a Jaquinn Henderson four yard run that gave them an early 6-3 lead.
The third quarter proved to be one of the most exciting as the two teams combined for 27 points. Hightower got on the board first in the second half on a Addison to Ryan Nelson 30 yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. Southlake Carroll respond with a pair of Kenny Hill touchdown passes. His first was went for 59 yards to Sabian Holmes and his second was a 25 yard toss to Corey Kemp.
Not to be outdone, Addison went back to work and raced pass the Carroll defense on a spectacular 80 yard run that would set the stage for an exciting fourth quarter.
The Southlake Carroll defense helped set the tone in the fourth quarter as they held off the Hightower offense and Kenny Hill finished off a great game by finishing off the winning drive with his six yard run early in the fourth quarter to hand the Dragons the state title.
Both teams combined for just under 800 yards of total offense with Southlake Carroll have the advantage with their 438 total yards of offense to Hightowers 357.
Kenny Hill passed for 238 yards on 18-of-23 passing with two touchdowns. He rushed for 117 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns on the ground. Sabian Holmes had 11 receptions for 186 yards.
Hightower was led in rushing by Bralon Addison wth 183 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Jaquinn Henderson carried eight times for 65 yards and one touchdown.
