Southlake Carroll Outlasts Fort Bend Hightower to Claim State Title

ARLINGTON — It was just one of several championship games this weekend at Cowboys Stadium but to Southlake Carroll (16-0) and Fort Bend Hightower (13-3) it was their chance to step on the big stage and claim a state championship in front of 42,896 fans. In the end it was Southlake Carroll claiming yet another state title and Hightower seeing one slip away as they came up just short in the 36-29 Southlake Carroll win.

Southlake Carroll took full advantage a short time later when Hill found the end zone on a six yard touchdown run to take a 36-29 lead.

Early on Hightower used a Drew Brown field goal to take an early lead. Hightower responded with a touchdown drive that ended with a Jaquinn Henderson four yard run that gave them an early 6-3 lead.




















The third quarter proved to be one of the most exciting as the two teams combined for 27 points. Hightower got on the board first in the second half on a Addison to Ryan Nelson 30 yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. Southlake Carroll respond with a pair of Kenny Hill touchdown passes. His first was went for 59 yards to Sabian Holmes and his second was a 25 yard toss to Corey Kemp.

Not to be outdone, Addison went back to work and raced pass the Carroll defense on a spectacular 80 yard run that would set the stage for an exciting fourth quarter.

The Southlake Carroll defense helped set the tone in the fourth quarter as they held off the Hightower offense and Kenny Hill finished off a great game by finishing off the winning drive with his six yard run early in the fourth quarter to hand the Dragons the state title.

Both teams combined for just under 800 yards of total offense with Southlake Carroll have the advantage with their 438 total yards of offense to Hightowers 357.

Kenny Hill passed for 238 yards on 18-of-23 passing with two touchdowns. He rushed for 117 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns on the ground. Sabian Holmes had 11 receptions for 186 yards.

Hightower was led in rushing by Bralon Addison wth 183 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Jaquinn Henderson carried eight times for 65 yards and one touchdown.

It was the eight state championship for Southake Carroll. As a 3A school they won in 1988, 1992 and 1993. Their 5A Division II titles came in 2002, 2004 and 2005 with 5A Division I titles coming in 2006 and then this weekend in Arlington. It was the Hightowers second appearance in the championship.

Each team knew that faces a tough task in stopping the other teams top rated and dangerous player. For Hightower that player was Bralon Addison and Southlake Carroll quarterback Kenny Hill was the player on Hightowers radar.

One of the biggest plays of the game came late in the second half and it was Southlake Carroll on the receiving end of the play. Down by one point at 29-28, Carroll needed a big play and got one when Will Davis forced a fumble by
The extra point attempt turned into a big play for Southlake Carroll. After getting a big push at the line, they busted through and blocked the extra point and returned it all the way for a safety leaving the Hightower lead at 6-5. They would add another Drew Brown field goall late in the first quarter to take a 8-6 lead into the second quarter.

Bralon Addison helped Hightower respond and take the lead at the 7:56 mark of the second quarter when he outran the Carroll defense on a 15 yard touchdown run. They would later add a 34-yard Luis Gallegos Perez field goal to push their lead out to 16-8.

It was then Kenny Hills turn to get the Carroll offense moving and he did just that. Southlake Carroll marched downfield for a late first half scoring drive and Hill capped the drive off with a one yard touchdown run and it was a 16-14 game on the half.
