Hammon Explodes for 33 Points to Lead San Antonio Past the Phoenix Mercury

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Becky Hammon poured in 33 points, nine of those coming on fourth quarter three pointers, to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars past the Phoenix Mercury Thursday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio in front of a crowd of 14,797.

San Antonio came out with great intensity and got out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Hammon helped set the tone early for the Silver Stars with her 13 first quarter points.

After a late second quarter run by Phoenix, and with time winding down in the first half, San Antonio's Scholanda Robinson nailed a 3-pointer that was followed by a Jia Perkins jumper. That allowed the Silver Stars to take a 48-42 lead into the locker room at the half.

San Antonio would go on to withstand any Phoenix effort to make a move and take the lead in the fourth quarter. The Mercury had no answer for Hammon as she nailed back-to-back 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter to put the Silver Stars up by 14 points.

With just over 2:08 left in the game, Hammon pretty much sealed the win for San Antonio when she hit another 3-pointer leaving the lead at 100-87 and allowing the Silver Stars to come away with the win.

"We did a lot of little things. I feel really good about this win, because I feel that we played good offensively. In the last few games it's really been a grind for us. It feels good; it was a great team win," said Hammon.

"I thought it was the type of game where I was really pleased on how we answered their runs back at us. We got control of the game early and you know they are (Phoenix) going to come back," said San Antonio Head Coach Dan Hughes.

Diana Taurasi finished off a 10-1 run for Phoenix several minutes into the third quarter to pull the Mercury to within one point. San Antonio had held a 71-62 before Phoenix made their run.

The Silver Stars answered with 7-0 run of their own as Becky Hammon kept San Antonio's offense rolling by hitting a 3-pointer during their push to extend their lead, which was now out to 78-70 as the fourth quarter got underway.

"I tell this team all the time, whenever you play Phoenix if you're down 20 you're in the game, if you're up 20 they're still in the game. They are always going to come back at you," said Hammon.
