The Memphis Redbirds Pound Out 17 Hits to Down The Round Rock Express at The Dell Diamond
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Memphis Redbirds (52-51) ended their four-game losing skid with a 10-4 win over the Round Rock Express (60-44) Tuesday night in Pacific Coast League action at Round Rock's Dell Diamond.
Memphis plated two runs in the first inning with Nick Stavinoha lifting a sacrifice fly to chase home the second run and stake the Redbirds to the early 2-0 lead. The Express answered in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Kata used a sacrifice fly to put the first Round Rock run across the plate but that is close as the Express would get as Memphis made it their night at the plate by swinging some red hot bats.
While the Redbirds hitters kept the Memphis offense rolling, starter Brian Broderick (4-3) frustrated most of the Express hitters with his strong 7.0 innings of work. He allowed three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.
Martin Perez got the start for the Express and found the going tough over his 5.0 innings of work as he took the loss. He gave up 11 hits resulting in eight runs to go along with four strikeouts and two walks. Derek Hanks came on in relief and had his troubles with the Redbirds hitters as well. He gave up a pair of runs on six hits to go along with two strikeouts in his 4.0 innings of work.
Joey Butler paced the Express offense with his 3-for-4 night at the plate and Nick Green finished with a pair of hits and a run scored. Val Majewski doubled in his first game with Round Rock and teammate Chad Tracy extended his hitting streak to nine games with his RBI single.
To go along with Stavinoha's 3-for-4 night at the plate, six Memphis hitters joined in with multiple hit games of their own. Donovan Solano was 3-for-5 and five different Redbirds had two hit nights.
Round Rock and Memphis will play game two of their four-game series Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Express will send Zach Jackson (7-4, 5.95 ERA) to the mound while the Redbirds will counter with Blaine Boyer who is making his first start for Memphis after the St. Louis Cardinals acquired him just a few days ago,
