Pflugerville powers past Converse Judson to win Round Rock Classic Basketball Tournament
The Pflugerville Panthers were able to avenge an earlier loss to Converse Judson Wednesday by coming out on top in the Round Rock Classic championship game by a score of 56-43 over Judson.
Pflugerville saw Judson take off down court on a fast break that resulted in a slam dunk and the games first points and all of a sudden they realized this was serious business and there was no time for getting it in gear if they were going to take the tournament trophy home.
“We try to play off big plays of other teams like that and try to get something going after that”, said Pflugerville Head Coach Mike Murphy. In some ways it was just what they needed to get them going as they responded with a 15-5 run over the course of the first quarter.
The Panthers used a high energy defensive effort and some aggressive offensive play to get to the free throw line during the run and ended the first quarter with a 15-7 lead.
Storm Woods hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter for the Panthers and teammate Deon Mitchell got rolling with seven points in the quarter to help Pflugerville build a 31-18 halftime lead. Mitchell had a couple of steals as Judson struggled to deal with his quickness. He also finished the half with 11 points. “He is special”, said Murphy. “The other night against Lufkin he had nine assists, 18 points, and seven rebounds. “Games like that are not every night but they are pretty common for him”.
Judson was never able to get 6’10” Stuart Lagerson involved but he opened the second half with a two-point basket down low as Judson looked to get some momentum coming out of the locker room at the half. They battled their way to within nine points at the start of the fourth period when they were able to get a rebound and a put back that cut the Panthers lead to 42-35.
Pflugerville then went on a 8-1 run that was capped with a Woods steal and dunk. With the Panthers lead all of a sudden at 50-36, with just under five minutes to go in the game, Judson took a timeout.
Coming out of the timeout Judson ran a perfectly drawn up play that resulted in a Lagerson slam dunk but the Panthers responded just as they had all night long. Judson cut the lead to 52-43 with 1:20 left in the game but Pflugerville managed to eat up the clock and come away with a 56-43 win to claim the 2009 Round Rock Classic Tournament.
“We had a lot of guys that scored tonight and we especially got more scoring from out inside guys”, said Murphy. “We are really a guard oriented teams but those guys came through”.
