Cibolo Steele Moves on to Play for State Title With Win Over Houston Memorial
SAN ANTONIO — Cibolo Steele (13-2) took full advantage of an opportunity to play for a state title as they defeated the Houston Memorial Mustangs (9-6) 44-20 in the Class 5A Division II state semifinals Saturday at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
Steele used a powerful rushing attack as University of Texas commit Malcolm Brown rumbled for 160 yards and two touchdowns. He also dazzled the crowd with a 100 yard kickoff return to open the second half of play.
It goes without saying that Brown showed why he considered the top running back propsect in the country but Steele's complete team effort also showed they are capable of coming away with a state championship next weekend.
Memorial found it very difficult to match the Steele offense, and after the Brown kickoff return, the Mustangs found themselves in big trouble trailing 31-7.
Memorial came to life as they fought to get back in the game scoring on their next two drives after giving up the long kick return. Quarterback Wayne Taylor scored on a one yard run and then running back Boomer White matched that with a one yard run of his own.
The Mustangs offensive spark was just not enough as they were never able to truly threaten in the second half. Steele seemingly moved the ball at will and their defense was able to keep the Mustangs in check for the most part.
White finished with 76 yards rushing with one touchdown. Taylor totaled 118 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns to go along with 56 yards passing.
Cibolo Steele will face Denton Guyer for the state championship next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
