The Manvel Mavericks Power Thier Way Past Dayton in Playoff Action

If turnovers where any indication of who would win Fridays Manvel (13-0) versus Dayton match up, one would think Dayton would be the team advancing to the next round of the playoffs after Manvel lost four fumbles in the first half. But Manvel's defense bailed out their offense early on by holding Dayton (9-4) to just one touchdown off the turnovers as the Mavericks tamed the Broncos by a score of 49-10.

Even though Manvel's offense had trouble holding on to the ball, the Mavericks managed to build a comfortable lead. Qylan Roberson and Selwyn Green both had rushing touchdowns and Kaylon Melacon hooked up with quarterback Shane McCarley on a 25-yard touchdown pass to stake Manvel to their 21-7 lead at halftime.

The Manvel defense then got in on the action when Idris Abdulaleem scooped up a Dayton fumble and returned it 26-yards for a touchdown and a commanding 49-7 lead.

That would wrap up the scoring for the Mavericks as they were content with running the ball and eating up the clock in the fourth quarter. Dayton would put together one more scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter that was finished off with a Juan Carranco 26-yard field goal. It was his 21st field goal of the season which is a state record.

Manvel finished with 475 total yards of offense to just 190 for Dayton. The Mavericks forced seven Bronco punts.

McCarley passed for 113 yards on 7-of-13 passing with one touchdown and rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Selwyn Green carried 18 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Dayton starting quarterback Andres Herrera finished with 83 yards on 11-of-18 passing.

Manvel head coach Kirk Martin must have said all the right things at halftime because the Mavericks took the field in the third quarter and got busy. While their defense continued to keep Dayton under wraps, their offense caught fire and scored on four straight possessions, all touchdowns, to put the game out of reach 49-10 headed into the fourth quarter.

Dayton scored the games first points on a Ryan McBride 15-yard run with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter after recovering a Manvel fumble.
McCarley came out and got the Manvel offense moving in the third quarter as they opened the second half with a scoring drive that he capped off with an eight yard touchdown run with 8:23 left in the third quarter.

Selwyn followed that up with his second touchdown run of the night when he raced into the end zone from 10-yards out with just under five minutes to go in the quarter. McCarley kept the offensive fireworks going minutes later when he added a 15-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to go in the third quarter.
