Aledo Powers Their Way Past a Determined Manvel Team in Championship Game

ARLINGTON — The Aledo Bearcats, and national player of the year running back Johnathan Gray, took the field at Cowboy Stadium Saturday looking to claim their third straight state title as they took on a strong Manvel Mavericks team. It wasn't easy but the Bearcats held off the Mavericks and came away with a 49-28 win to clinch the 4A Division II Championship in front of a crowd of 43,369.

was quick to give him credit. "Matt just steps up when it is game time. He is a great vocal leader and a great physical leader," said Gray.

After a Todd Christian interception return early in the second quarter that went for 70-yards and another Aledo touchdown, Bishop continued his stellar play in the first half helping Aledo score two more times. Once on an eight yard run and then on a 10 yard touchdown pass to Parker Brandham. Both within a span of about three minutes, to push their lead out to 28-7. "The kid (Bishop) is a great football player and he has a great sense of the game," said Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan.

needed as he led the Bearcats down the field and finished things off with a five yard touchdown run as the clock expired in the third quarter.

Manvel fought back to close the gap again on a Shane McCarley touchdown run of one yard at the 9:35 mark of the fourth quarter and placed their hopes in the hands of their defense as time quickly became their enemy.

But just as it had been all game long, their defense found the going tough as they tried to stop Gray on the ground and Bishop in the air. Gray outran the Mavericks defense on a 37-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to set the national record for career touchdowns (205) and extend the Aledo lead once again.

Aledo was expected to make fairly quick work of Manvel and Gray was the one to do most of the damage. But after falling behind in the first half Manvel's offense got rolling in the third quarter and pulled to within seven.

That is when Manvel felt like they had to take a chance and they did with an onside kick. It was a bold move but it ended up paying dividends for Aledo as they recovered the kick and marched downfield to extend their lead.
It was a chance Manvel Head Coach Kirk Martin felt he had to take after struggling on offense in the first half. "I really felt like it could have been a different game had we come out and executed a little better on offense," explained Kirk.

Aledo scored their first touchdown of the day on a Matthew Bishop to Willie Gibson 44-yard touchdown pass at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter. Bishop helped Aledo build their first half lead and teammate Johnathan Gray
Throughout the first half Gray was a huge factor by rushing the ball well and forcing Manvel to stop the run. "I thought we contained him alright but you know, he had a good night," said Kirk.

Manvel managed to climb back into the game in the third quarter in a familiar way, Shane McCarley to Corey Seymour touchdown passes. The first came at the 4:44 mark of the third quarter when McCarley found Seymour for a 10 yard touchdown pass and the second was a 29 yard scoring strike that cut the Aledo lead to 28-21.

That is when they decided to take a gamble and try the onside kick but Aledo was ready and played it perfectly to leave them in great field position. And that is all Bishop
Bishop put the finishing touches on the championship win when he connected with Parker Brandham on a 10 yard touchdown pass with just under a minute to go in the game. Bishop finished with 182 yards passing on 14-of-17 attempts and three touchdowns and 28 yards rushing on 12 carries with two touchdowns.
Gray rushed for 247 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown.

Manvel was led in rushing by Shane McCarley with 83 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries and teammate Selwyn Green carried seven times for 46 yards and one touchdown. McCarley also passed for 237 yards on 12-of-30 passing with two touchdowns.
