Lake Travis strikes early and rolls to convincing win over Westwood in season opener
The Lake Travis Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they dominated the Westwood Warriors 55-31 Friday at Round Rock ISD Stadium.
Running back Andy Erickson racked up over 300 yards of total offense for the Cavaliers and quarterback Michael Brewer turned in a nice performance going 16-of-19 on pass attempts for 372 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
Westwood was not able to get anything going on it’s opening drive and when Lake Travis got their hands on the ball they struck for a quick score. It was Erickson hauling in a short pass from Brewer and racing 34-yards downfield for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the PAT.
The Cavalier defense held Westwood once again resulting a punt on fourth down. Waiting to gather in the punt was Erickson, and he was off to the races once again as he sprinted 74 yards for his second touchdown of the game to give Lake Travis a 14-0 lead. They would add a field goal minutes later to stretch their lead to 17-0.
Westwood would finally get on the board early in the second quarter when Jordan Williamson booted an impressive 47-yard field goal cutting the Cavalier lead to 17-3. The Warriors defense then helped their cause when they came up with a big hit on the Cavalier’s next possession resulting in a fumble. Tyson Brower picked the ball up and took it all the way back for a Warrior touchdown to help pull them to within seven at 17-10 after the PAT.
It was a long first half for the Warriors from that point on as Lake Travis outscored them 17-7 over the final several minutes of the second quarter resulting in a 34-17 Cavalier lead at the half.
The second half got underway with Erickson taking a screen pass and avoiding several tacklers before racing 80-yards for a touchdown that would extend the 34-17 Cavalier lead to 41-17.
Westwood would try and find an answer on offense as they rotated Blake Balazs and Ben Johnson at quarterback but the Cavaliers proved to be to much as they went on the win in convincing fashion 55-31.
Westwood running back Princeton Collins did not disappoint in his season debut as he scored two touchdowns and rushed for 160 yards on 28 carries. He also had 37 yards receiving.
With the win the Cavaliers extended their win streak to 30-games, the longest win streak in the state.
Westwood will take on Harker Heights next Friday at RRISD Stadium and Lake Travis will be at home to host Westlake.
