Hutto holds off late LBJ surge to come away with win in opening week of the season

It took a stellar defensive stand with just seconds left on the clock but the Hutto Hippos held on for a 28-20 hard fought win over LBJ Friday night at Hippo Stadium in Hutto.

Hutto held a 21-13 lead as the third quarter expired but the fourth quarter saw LBJ fight their way back as both teams battled to claim the win in the opening game of the season.

The Hippos took an early 8-0 lead before LBJ roared back to score back to back touchdowns and take the lead as the first quarter came to a close.

Hutto’s Alondre Thorn tossed a touchdown pass to Alex Aday in the second quarter as the Hippos took a 15-13 lead and moved out in front to stay. “Offensively it seemed like we never got in a rhythm. I really don’t think it was a lack of effort, the kids really made a good effort and at times we really looked dynamic”, said Hutto Head Coach Lee Penland.

LBJ surrendered a third quarter touchdown when Darrin Allen punched it in from inside the one-yard line pushing the Hippo lead to 22-13. The Jaguars made their move at the start of the fourth quarter when they connected on a long pass play to cut the lead to one at 22-20 with 11:29 to play in the game.

The Hippos came right back and drove down the field for a touchdown but a missed extra point allowed the Jaguars to stay within a single score at 28-20. LBJ managed to move the ball deep inside Hutto territory but the game clock was not on their side as time ran out and the Hippo defense did a good job of bending but not breaking.

Hutto will be back in action Thursday night against Austin Travis at Burger Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
