Hardin-Simmons Uses Second Half Surge to Defeat Concordia and Come Away With Huge Road Win
The Concordia (7-13, 5-11) Women's Basketball team was able to hold the lead for most of the first half against Hardin-Simmons (11-9, 8-8) but could not hold off the Cowgirls in the second half as they fell by a score of 80-72 Thursday night at the Concordia Field house.
With the score tied at 14-14, with 11:09 to go in the first half, Concordia's Kerrie Carter nailed a three pointer to give the Tornados the early lead. They would hold the lead for the rest of the first half of play as they shot a stellar 66.7 percent from behind the arc. Hardin-Simmons went 0-5 from three point land in the first half but had the advantage down low as they outscored Concordia 20-12 in the paint .
Concordia came out in the second half and continued their solid play which allowed them to build as much as a seven point lead over the first 10 minutes of the half. But the momentum gradually shifted in Hardin-Simmons favor as they got their offense clicking.
Alexis Popelar hit a three pointer to cut the Concordia lead to one and Bo Warm helped the Cowgirls move out in front for good at 60-61 when she scored on a lay-up with 7:05 left in the game.
Hardin-Simmons was able to move their lead to double digits with 30 seconds left in the game when they took a 80-70 lead on a Lindsey Newcombe lay-up. Concordia's Brianne Smith scored on a short jumper a few seconds later but it was the Cowgirls who came away with the 80-72 win.
Concordia had six players score in double figures and was led in scoring by Brianna Smith with 17 points. Skylar Lott had a solid all around game as she finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Hardin-Simmons Alexis Popelar led the Cowgirls in scoring with her 18 points. Lindsey Newcombe had 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
