Baylor Turns in Solid Effort as They Take Care of Business Against The Rice Owls

WACO, Texas – The nationally ranked Baylor Bears (3-0) stayed unbeaten this season as Quarterback Robert Griffin III continued to shine in leading the Bears past the Rice Owls (1-2) by a score of 56-31 Saturday Night at Floyd Casey Stadium.

“You can’t play a team like Baylor and make the mistakes that we made offensively and defensively. And you can’t have the type of mental errors we had and expect to walk away with the win,” said Rice Head Coach David Bailiff.

Baylor jumped out to a 35-7 lead after Griffin lead the Bears on five straight scoring drives that all resulted in touchdowns. Rice fought hard to keep their chances alive but a tipped pass was intercepted by Baylor’s Ahmad Dixon and taken back for 55 yard touchdown to extend the Bears lead.

I love it. I haven’t seen this before. It didn’t matter who we were playing, really, we weren’t getting fans here. So they’re doing a great job. We’re a ranked football team, they’re excited about what we’re doing and we’re excited about them showing up and yelling for us,” said Baylor Quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Bears have been a scoring machine so far this season with their 50 points against TCU in their exciting season opener, 48 points in their bad weather shortened game against SFA and Saturdays win where they put up 50 plus points.

Rice was hoping to pull off an upset against the Bears after surprising some with their win over Purdue the week before. However, this game was different as the Owls found themselves up against the high powered offense of Baylor.
Griffin continued his outstanding play the next time Baylor had the ball when he tossed a 64-yard touchdown pass. On the Bears next drive Baylor showed their offense was capable of keeping the ball on the ground and doing some damage as they drove 72 yards without a pass to score yet again. Griffin capped the drive with a 4 yard run.

The Owls first half points came on a Jeremy Eddington two yard touchdown run that capped a five play 80 yard drive, a Chris Boswell 31-yard field goal, and a Vance McDonald 5-yard touchdown pass which closed out the first half scoring and left the Bears lead at 35-17 going into halftime.

Rice would pick up a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters but it wouldn’t be enough to threaten the Bears who would score 56 points on the day, 21 of those in the second half, to come away with the 56-31 win. “It’s great.
Terrance Ganaway led Baylor in rushing with his 89 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Martin Glasco carried five times for 83 yards and Griffin finished with 51 yards rushing and completed 29-of-33 passes for 338 yards and five touchdowns.

Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue led the Owls in rushing with 62 yards on 14 carries and he was 23-of-38 passing for 260 yards and three touchdowns.
