Robert Griffin III Helps Lead Baylor Past Oklahoma in a Big XII Conference Shootout

WACO -- Having lost 20 straight games to the Oklahoma Sooners, Baylor found all the right buttons to push on offense as Heisman candidate Robert Griffin III passed for school record 479 yards to lead the Bears to 45-38 win over the Sooners.

Oklahoma put the first points on the board when Mike Hunnicutt kicked a 47-yard field goal with just under six minutes to go in the first quarter. Baylor closed out the first quarter scoring a few minutes later on an Aaron Jones 34-yard field goal with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

"It’s another day at the office for Robert. He’s been doing that for three or four years. When the ball’s in his hands good things happen because he’s very intelligent, very gifted," said Baylor Head Coach Art Briles.
Oklahoma came out of the locker room in the third quarter and scored two rushing touchdowns to take a 24-17 lead but it came as no surprise that Baylor would set off some more offensive fireworks minutes later.

And once again it was Griffin shredding the Sooner defense with an 87 yard touchdown pass to Kendall Wright and then later in the third quarter he tossed a 13 yard scoring strike to Jordan Najvar to cap a 10 play drive with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

Fortunately, Robert scrambled, got to midfield, got out of bounds, then the whole things flips. Then the ball’s in our court and he was able to make an outstanding play right there at the end," said Briles.Delete ReplyReply ForwardSpamMovePrint Actions NextPrevious

Baylor struck first in the second quarter when Terrance Ganaway put the finishing touches on a 3 play 83-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run with 7:14 left to go in the half.

It was then time for Oklahoma to do their thing as they fans were starting to see what they hoped they would see, a high scoring shoot out by two of the nations best offenses. The Sooners didn't disappoint as they took the ball and drove 72 yards on 11 plays with Blake Bell finding his way into the end zone from 3-yards out.
Griffin then showed why so many see him as a favorite in the Heisman race by connecting with Tavin Reese on a 69 yard touchdown pass just seconds later to send the Bears to the locked room at the half with a 17-10 lead.
By this time the fans had their money worth but the fourth quarter was sure to put the finishing touches on a spectacular night of football. Spectacular is exactly the way this one would end as both teams accounted for four touchdowns.

Baylor hit pay dirt first in the fourth quarter on a Ganaway touchdown run of 11 yards to put the Bears up 38-24. The Sooners followed that up with two touchdowns, the last of which tied the game at 38-38 with just under a minute to go in the game.

The last 51 seconds saw the making of something the Baylor faithful waited years for, a win over Oklahoma. The Bears marched 80 yards to take a 45-38 lead when Griffin connecting with Terrance Williams on a 34 yard touchdown pass with just eight seconds to play."
